Plenty of people get COPD
COPD is more widespread than you may think. More than 24 million people in the U.S. have COPD, but less than half are diagnosed.
A few things can cause COPD, but smoking cigarettes is responsible in 80% to 90% of all cases in the U.S. Among nonsmokers, other risk factors for developing the condition include long-term exposure to secondhand smoke, occupational exposure to dust and chemicals, and indoor and outdoor air pollution as well as a family history of COPD.
